Dear colleagues, dear friends,
We are sad to learn of the very recent passing of Prof Dr Winfried Lampert in Plön. Winfried was a giant of Limnology and Ecology and was the long time Director of the Dept of Physiological Ecology at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology at Plön and for many years Director of the Institute, one of the longest established and long-lasting limnology institutes in the world. He pioneered the study of limnology from an ecological and evolutionary point of view, explaining satisfactorily the phenomenon of vertical migration in Daphnia using his famous 'plankton towers’. He coined the term ‘Limnoecology', using it as the title of his highly successful textbook, co-authored with Uli Sommer, and was for many years Editor of ’the Archiv’ (für Hydrobiologie, renamed ‘Fundamental & Applied Limnology'). He won the Naumann Thienemann medal of SIL in 1995, the Ecology Institute Prize for Limnetic Ecology in 2006, the Winberg medal of the Russian Hydrobiological Society in 2006, and the Redfield Lifetime Achievement Award of ASLO in 2012. He was a dedicated mentor and hard-working supervisor of young scientists in his group (many of whom went on to great things) and was the leading freshwater ecologist in Germany for many years. In his spare time he was a keen and gifted underwater photographer and maker of films on marine life.
Our thoughts are with his wife Renate and family."
