General information

 The aim of the Polish Hydrobiological Society is to promote and stimulate hydrobiological studies.

The Society was founded in 1959. Its presidents have been Professors: Marian Gieysztor, Przemysław Olszewski, Józef Stanisław Mikulski, Zdzisław Kajak, Stanisław Radwan and at present Andrzej Górniak. The Society has 12 branches: in Białystok, Gdynia, Koszalin, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Olsztyn, Poznań, Szczecin, Toruń, Warszawa and Wrocław. Number of members exceeds 500.

The Polish Hydrobiological Society is a collective member of Societas Internationalis Limnologiae.

 The main activities of the Society

Research – the inspiration and supporting of hydrobiological-limnological studies on: the biology and ecology of organisms, communities and biocenoses and the functioning of aquatic and wetland ecosystems and their protection.

 

The propagation of Polish and world achievements in hydrobiology-limnology; as presented at Congresses of Polish Hydrobiologists (assembling every three years), at Polish and international Conferences, Symposia and Workshops and at sessions of Regional Branches of the Society.

 

The rewarding of distinguished papers for Msc.-degree.

 

The organizing of scientific excursions.

 

Training – by organizing specialist workshops and courses for the staff of institutions dealing with environmental protection, young scientific workers from the Universities, other scientific institutions, etc.

 

Advising on and evaluating works on the practical applications of hydrobiology-limnology by participating in and cooperating with the advisory teams of various institutions as well as governmental and regional councils.

 

Activities in circles of specialists (e.g. on benthos, rotifers).

 Editorial activity

The Society is co-editor of the editorial series “Fauna Słodkowodna Polski” (Freshwater Fauna of Poland) comprising of monographic studies on (and keys to) particular groups of the fauna; 31 volumes have been published since 1935, when the series was founded.

 

“Wiadomości Hydrobiologiczne” (Hydrobiological News) has been published regularly as part of the Quarterly “Wiadomości Ekologiczne” (Ecological News), edited by the Institute of Ecology Polish Academy of Sciences; it contains information on the Society’s activities, as well as information and reports on hydrobiology in Poland and abroad – research, conferences, critical reviews of books etc.

 

The Benthic and Rotiferological Sections of the Society publish irregularly their bulletins “Dno” (The Bottom) and “Nowinki Rotiferologiczne” (Rotiferological Tidings).
